How Product Packaging Can Make You Hundreds, 
Or Maybe Even Thousands Of Dollars!

Here’s something a friend and business associate of ours has been doing - web site design work. So far, he and his company have proved to be very successful at it, possibly more so than most other companies specializing in this field out there. So how does this sort of business work?

Two years ago when his company started in web design he started out like everyone else, letting different companies in the area know that they had a design team that could do the design work on sites and that they had a hosting system where they could put the site on the Internet. 

They were charging so much per hour, then so much an hour for the hosting, then site promotion which was so much per thousand search engines, or they’d put it on 50 search engines for so much money per month. They were very successful with it, and they were growing - but very slowly. 

He wanted to kick-start his operation and make some real money. So he started looking around to find ways to make their company different. There are a lot of web site

design companies in the world of all sizes, shapes, and prices. He wanted to come up with something that would make their company unique. 

This is what you need to do with any product or business you are selling, of course - find your unique selling position that gives you an edge over any potential competition. 

One thing he noticed was that everybody was charging monthly fees here and additional fees there, so much an hour and, “Oh, by the way, it’s really difficult to tell you how much exactly it’s going to be to design your web site, but we can give you an estimate.” That always turns out to be lower than the actual cost. There was just surprise after surprise - and not the pleasant kind - for anybody who was buying a web site. 

So he decided to put together a package. He put his head to work and decided to package up everything, put it all in one package, so people come up with one price that they pay, and they know how much it is going to cost them to design a web site. He established an upward limit on the number of web site pages they could have in a web site they designed in this package price. 

He then he included the search engines submissions, which give the site that kick of promotion to get it out there where people can find it. For hosting the web site, he figured up

The idea was that by packaging all this and charging everything up front and charging one fee, he could give customers web site promotion and hosting at a price that they could not find anywhere else because they were getting a one year commitment, there was no monthly billing, etc. 

There were so many things that saved our friend money and time he could charge a price that was far lower, and make it very attractive - and on the customer’s end there would be no surprises. It gave him that unique selling position. He could say, “Here it is, here’s how much money it’ll cost you for one year. There are no other charges. There’s nothing else that is going to cost you, there are no surprises, no unpleasant unexpected additional expenses.”

Then he hooked up with us in a joint venture where he could concentrate on what he did best - designing, and hosting and managing web sites for people. He also hooked up with dozens of other smaller companies through a program he provided to clients where they could sell his web sites for him, similar to an affiliate program - and it’s very popular today.

The end result of combining a package that gave him a unique selling position and hooking up with dozens of companies that marketed this product for him at an excellent profit for them (and at a savings to him because he didn’t have to set up the marketing) was the ability within two short years to bring in a little over 7,000 clients and more than 10,000 web sites.
