How One Little Video Rental Store Took 
On Blockbuster Video - And WON!

 

Blockbuster Video provides us with a great, great answer. This little sci-fi video store really took on a giant. 

In San Diego near Pacific Beach, they used to have a general, small video rental store. Lo and behold, at the other end of the block here came Blockbuster Video that took over an old drug store that went out of business. Blockbuster was about 5 times larger than what became the sci-fi video store. They could not compete with Blockbuster – they were too big, they had too many titles, they had too much advertising power. 

What they did is that they changed their little general store into a science fiction video store. Now they’re making more money than they’ve ever made before, and they’re competing to the point where Blockbuster often says, “We don’t have that many sci-fi titles, but if you just walk up the street a few steps, the sci-fi video store has 10 times bigger selection and you’ll probably find it there.”

The situation is often the same on the Internet. We can specialize and take on those giants, and we can be very, very successful.
