Your local area has some claim to fame, wherever you live. Maybe it’s the home of the Chicago Bulls, maybe it’s Amish Country or Wine Country. Whatever it is, you take it for granted. When people from far away think area, they picture your area that way - “Home of the Bulls,” “Wine Country,” “Home of the world’s largest ball of twine,” - that’s what they think of. 

And those people may be collectors! This is how to find unique items selling for dirt-cheap in your area - that people all over the world will pay HUGE money for!

We live in Kansas. When you land in Kansas, one of the first things you will see in Wichita’s airport is Wizard of Oz merchandise. Everything is Wizard of Oz, and there are people who collect that merchandise. 

For those who live here, we can pick up those products for a song. But there are people who collect Wizard of Oz merchandise elsewhere in the world - and many of them can find that such merchandise is very rare and/or very expensive in their area. We’ve met people

from other states that are really willing to pay quite a bit for it - even more if they learn that it comes from Kansas, the home state of the movie.

In Alaska, there’s a lot of Eskimo crafts. In Amish country they make handmade items with no electricity. In Hollywood or anywhere near L.A., you could sell celebrity autographed photos. Anyone who lives in Tennessee could sell things related to Nashville or Memphis, with Elvis collectibles. People go crazy for Elvis memorabilia!

If you’re in Florida, you have Daytona Beach and NASCAR. In Missouri, Mark Twain collectibles. Wherever you live there has to be a sports team that you could specialize in - New England Saints? Oakland Raiders? Wichita Thunder hockey? New York Yankees? L.A. Lakers?

Anywhere in the South you could have Civil War collectibles, but they don’t have many of them out in California There are no cannonballs, no battle grounds to visit. In Washington D.C. there’s all the old campaign items such as “I like Ike” buttons, and collectibles of John F. Kennedy. 

In San Francisco people are crazy about the Grateful Dead - their fans are called “Deadheads.” Deadheads actually go on a pilgrimage to Height-Ashbury to stand in front of and visit the Grateful Dead’s old Victorian
house - and they buy all of that tie-died stuff.

If you’re in Montana or Arizona you could market cowboy collectibles, Tombstone, Arizona with its gun fighting history, and the cattle drives. Milwaukee’s known for beer. People collect old beer steins, old beer bottles, and beer signs that light up like Hamm signs. They’ll sell for a fortune! 

New York is known for a lot of things. One of them is diamonds and jewelry. California, on the other hand, is the home of a lot of computer companies. 

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. You could specialize in products from other countries. You could import if you’re Irish, French, Italian, or whatever, and sell it on these Sites. The main thing is to look for what’s right under your nose. 

When you go to e-Bay and you look at the items up for bid, there is a whole category called “Things from Hawaii.” They have hula apparel, accessories, and general items. Maybe they’ll have a category for some of these other things from different areas: Hollywood or Las Vegas. 

What’s your town’s claim-to-fame? Wherever you live, try to see what is unique about the area, what they export, what’s the tourist attraction, what is the area known for. Since it’s so abundant in your area, the price is low. In Hawaii you can pick their things up cheap - once you bring it back over here to the mainland, then it has a premium on it!

Nobody’s going to fly over there just to buy something like that, but they’ll sure buy it online - and the same could very well be true for you!

Just think of something that’s in your area that you take for granted . . . that other people who are far, far away would think, “Wow, you’re from there? You have that?” . . . and they’d pay a premium price for!
